What is an AI agent

An AI agent is a program that uses a language model to plan steps toward a goal, call tools, and keep going until the work is done. It does not answer one question, it carries a task through.

The difference shows in the output. A chatbot returns text, and you do something with it. An agent does the something: it opens a file, checks a calendar, drafts a message, and only asks you when it gets stuck.

A chatbot tells you what should be done. An agent does it and reports back.

AI agent vs chatbot: where the line is

The line is blurry, and three questions settle it. If the answer to all three is yes, you are looking at an agent.

01Can it see and act outside the chat It reaches files, a calendar, an inbox or a web page, instead of working only with what you pasted. Protocols like MCP provide that connection.
02Does it plan in more than one step It splits the task, lets the result of one step decide the next, and backs up when something fails.
03Does it keep going on its own It does not wait for you after every step. That is the biggest gain and also the biggest risk.

How an agent works inside

The whole thing is a loop. The model gets a goal and a list of tools, picks the next step, calls a tool, reads the result and decides again. It runs until it believes it is done, or until the budget runs out.

It follows that an agent is only as good as its goal and its tools. A vague task does not get smarter by running in many steps, it just gets lost in more places.

Three jobs worth handing over first

Pick work where a mistake is cheap and you can review the result before anything becomes final.

01Research and gathering Ten sources turned into one tidy overview, with links. You still check it, but the gathering time disappears.
02Inbox and calendar triage Labelling, a summary of the morning mail, a proposed plan for the week. Proposals only, with no sending and no deleting.
03Repeating admin The same spreadsheet update or report every week. If you can write it as steps, an agent can run it.

What not to trust it with

Moving money, deleting things, messages that go to other people, and anything you cannot undo. An agent can head confidently in the wrong direction, and because it keeps going on its own, you find out at the end.

Two rules help. Start with read access and add write access later. Ask for approval before every irreversible step.

A task for an agent with a safe frame around it
Goal: collect this week's client emails into one overview.
Tools: read only access to the inbox, no writing.

Do it like this:
1. Find the emails my clients sent this week.
2. For each one, write a line: who, what they want, the deadline.
3. Sort by deadline.

Rule: do not reply, delete or forward anything.
If something is unclear, flag it instead of guessing.
Key takeaways
An AI agent carries a goal through steps and tools, while a chatbot only returns text.
Three questions decide it: does it reach outside the chat, does it plan in steps, does it keep going alone.

Common questions

What is an AI agent in simple terms?

A program that uses a language model to split a task into steps, use tools, and keep going on its own until it is done. A chatbot answers, an agent carries out.

What are AI agents used for?

Mostly research, inbox and calendar triage, and repeating admin work. The best first jobs are the ones where a mistake is cheap and you can review the result.

Is ChatGPT an AI agent?

By default it is a conversation: you ask, you get text. It behaves like an agent when it is given tools and allowed to take several steps by itself.

Do you need to code to use an AI agent?

Not to use one. Ready made agents and tool connections exist, and most of the real work is deciding what the agent may reach and what it may not.

Is it safe to let an agent read my email?

As safe as the permissions you grant. Start read only, and require approval before sending or deleting anything.
