AI glossary/Prompt engineering

What is prompt engineering?

Prompt engineering is the practice of writing the instruction you give an AI deliberately instead of guessing. It is not a collection of magic phrases: it is the work of giving a model enough context, one clear task and a standard for what a good answer looks like.

What prompt engineering is not

There is no sentence you can append to a prompt that makes a model smarter, and no template that fits every task. The phrase collections sold as prompt packs mostly work because they happen to contain context and a format, not because the words are special.

The useful version is more boring than the marketing: describe the situation, name one outcome, say what the result should look like, and say how you will judge it.

The four parts that decide the answer

Role: who the model should act as, because that decides what it notices at all. Context: the actual material, pasted in rather than summarised. Task: one verb, one outcome. Format: length, structure, tone, and what to leave out.

Those four lines fix most disappointing answers, and they need no tools and no subscription. Prompt engineering is writing and thinking far more than it is technique.

What prompt engineering cannot fix

If a fact is not in the prompt, the model guesses, and it writes the guess with exactly the same confidence as the things it knows. That is missing context, not a wording problem.

And if the task itself is not thought through, no prompt will think it through for you. AI speeds up work you have defined, it does not do the defining.

Is it a real job?

For a while it was advertised as one. What actually happened is that it became a normal skill inside other jobs, the way writing a good brief is part of being an editor or a designer rather than a separate profession.

That is good news if you already work with words: the people who write the best prompts are usually the ones who wrote good briefs before any of this existed.

Common questions

What is prompt engineering in simple terms?

Writing the instruction for an AI on purpose: giving it a role, the real context, one task and a format, so the first answer is close enough to be useful.

Do you need to code for prompt engineering?

No. It is written work. Programming helps only when you start wiring prompts into software, which is a separate skill.

How long does prompt engineering take to learn?

The fundamentals fit into a week of five minute sessions, because there are only four moving parts. Building a prompt library shaped to your own recurring work is what takes longer.
